People are more than happy to share their views on their organisation, and positively this information gathering can be a low cost way to improve performance and the bottom line. The more people that complete any opinion survey the more impact it will have on the business, here are our top tips on how to create an engaging and fun opinion survey.
Think about what you are trying to achieve but don’t overburden the survey with questions that aren’t relevant. Keep it simple so you can feasibly be able to deal with all the outcomes. You could also offer incentives for participating e.g. charitable donation, gift for the first department to complete and so on. Some topics to consider for inclusion are:
- How happy and satisfied/engaged your employees are
- What the brand means to them
- Whether and how culture and values ‘live’ through the business
- Whether people feel they are fairly rewarded and recognised
- How change is perceived within the organisation
- Ideas and Innovations – (in our experience, some of the best ideas for improvement come from the ‘shop floor’)
Examples of different types of questions are:
- Scales – for example questions that would be rated on a scale of 1-10. E.g. how happy are you at work?
- Simple yes/no questions – e.g. Do you feel you live up to the company’s values
- List e.g. What role would you like to be working in within the next 12 months (list of possible job roles included)
- Radio buttons and tick boxes
At BskyB they have a specific ‘Sky Forum’ where 70 elected employees put forward employee views, almost like a union. They hold regular meetings with the Chief Executive where they discuss points put forward by their colleagues. The CEO will listen and think about their proposals.
One scheme implemented as a result was the ‘Keeping Karma’ Programme where BskyB give their people the tools to lead a healthy lifestyle by knowing key numbers such as their BMI, weight and blood pressure levels.
As a result of this, BskyB’s recorded an all time high employee engagement score of 87%.

When gathering the results, ensure that the data you extract is as simple as possible. Make it short sharp and in bullet point format for easy viewing. Start by focussing on the easy wins so that people can see some tangible outcomes quickly. Then categorise the rest by level of importance and impact into four sections; easy and low cost, easy and high cost, complex low-cost, complex high cost. This will help prioritise and then feed this back so people know the plan.
If you only do three things…
- Ensure that everybody is prepared to deal with feedback given (it won’t all be positive)
- If you use a survey, make it fun, engaging and easy to do
- Take action and positive steps to improve your survey results. Listen to the people that glue your company together
